We call Greater Kruger, the private nature reserves that border the Kruger National Park. Those private nature reserves don’t have any fences with the KNP, which means all the animals can move totally free in between the KNP and those private nature reserves. This is the place where you can find the top level lodges offering a very high level of service with a particular attention to the decoration and the view.

The density of the wildlife there is quite high. Unlike the Kruger National Park, when  you are in a private nature reserve, you almost never see any other vehicle. This is THE place to be if you are looking for an intimate experience and some close encounters opportunities with the wildlife.

Each private reserve is different and has her own signature in terms of habitat and landscape. Some of them will be more sandy with big trees and flat landscape, others more rocky with lots of bushes, some with high hills and dry river beds where you can drive in. This is why it is so interesting to do at least 3 of them to be able to see different kind of landscapes and to multiply your chance to see more wildlife too.

All those private nature reserves have their specificities, but they also all have one thing in common: the abundance of the wildlife is very well known and  the most stunning lodges are settled  there.

The experience of your safari will be quite different here, offering you high level of quality of service, intimate drives or walks, expert guides and trackers who know by heart their reserve and the habits of some of the animals who have a territory there (like the big cats such as lions and leopards).

Expertise and Authenticity

Unlike the KNP which is open to everyone who has a close vehicle, private nature reserves are only accessible for those who are staying in the reserve and only certified guide are allowed to drive there in an open 4×4 game viewer.

That means you are almost by yourself there with the wildlife.

Another big difference: in those private reserve, you will not have to stick on the main road, you will be taken in the middle of the bush, sometimes off road following one of the big five and being very very close to them.

A more intimate safari

For sure, you are not going to see lots of other vehicle there.

You will sometimes have the feeling that you and your guide have the whole reserve for yourself. There is some very strict rules that applies here to make sure animals don’t be disturbed or don’t feel to invaded: no more than 3 sometimes even 2 vehicle on the same sighting in respect of the wildlife.

Only certified guide are allowed to drive here. They know their area very well and they know also very well the kind of pride who established their territory too.

We will always do our best to maximize our chance to spot all your favorites animals but of course, as they are all wild and free in reserves open to the Kruger (which means more than 2 millions hectares), it is impossible to guarantee you to see the Big Five for instance. This is what make a safari exciting, you have to fight and work hard to find them. Having the best guides and trackers with you, will help you for sure.

Till now, I have been lucky to say that all my past guests have seen the big five with me, and all of them in their natural habitat, in a completely open area unfenced with the KNP.
